This week I was questioned by a well-meaning loved one about why we are taking on two Muslim girls next year. I really don't mean this post as an insult to that person, but it did occur to me that more people might wonder what the heck we are doing and why, as this person suggested, we don't just "find a nice European girl"?
First, from an entirely selfish direction, we have found this year that Nasreen has blended well with our family. Yes, she comes from a different culture, but at the end of the day, she respects us, wants to be a part of our family, and is not here just to take advantage of us. She is loving, funny, and easy to love back.
Second, Muslims are closer in world view to Christians than Atheists are. They believe in God, and they believe that Truth exists. I really think this leads to more mutual understanding and respect for our faith, which is very important to us. If, as a family, we felt that Truth was relative, it probably would be a lot harder to live with someone with such strong values, but for us it is a good fit.
Also, we see our time with Nasreen, and the girls next year, as a ministry. We can not go live in a Muslim country right now and show these people that we love them and God loves them, but if Nasreen can take home a little of the love that we try to show her, perhaps the forgiveness that God offers will be more apparent to them and their families.
Fourth, we aren't really looking for an entirely predictable and "safe" life. From the time that Audrey's Dad and I met up in Las Vegas (after years of dating) and got married, taking risks and having some adventure has been part of what we do as a family. We enjoy our wonderful memories of our son, but we don't want to sit on the couch and wallow in them day after day. We want to embrace that adventure that life brings and build new amazing memories in our home.
