Miriam's trip to DC

We have finally received more information about Miriam's week-long trip to Washington DC.  100 students across the US, were awarded this trip, so it is amazing that 3 of them were from our community.

According to emails she has received,

The 2013 Workshop will:
• Provide you with a deeper understanding of the American system of government, civic education,
and democratic principles through observation of its institutions, peer discussions, and
participation in a large-scale grassroots engagement activity;
• Provide you with an opportunity to meet and discuss current issues with political leaders;
• Provide you with an opportunity to expand your knowledge of US civil society; and,
• Provide you with an opportunity to attend a cultural event, visit Washington’s monuments and
memorials, and explore various exhibits in our famous Smithsonian museums and galleries.

The week is sponsored by "The American Civics Center www.americancivicscenter.com is an innovative, nonpartisan force in citizenship education dedicated to providing quality, affordable, and accessible programs that encourage participants to learn about history, government, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. The organization’s mission is to prepare citizens for active and responsible participation in democracy."

Some of the subjects the students will cover during the week include:

Focus: Freedom, Democracy and Equality for All
Focus: Fair and Free Elections

Focus: The First Amendment and Religious Liberty in American Public Life

I'm so excited!!  (if only I were able to go along ...)
