Recently "Nasreen" and I were talking about some of the things her family does in Karachi. She told me about the "water parks" where men and women have separate areas, and everyone wears all of their clothing into the wading pools, even young children. Women who normally wear a burka will continue to wear it even at the water park. Somehow that doesn't sound very refreshing....
Last night, "Oksana" was showing Nasreen and I some pictures from about 18 months ago, when she was very thin. Posing alongside the pool in her skimpy bikini, Oksana looked like a normal European teenager. I thought Nasreen was going to have a heart attack, though, at the public almost-nudity.
Overall, though, they seem to be finding more common ground in being teenage girls... I think we'll keep them away from the swimming pool.
