Oksana decided to make borscht (soup) for us one of the first days, and since she is not inclined to enjoy the kitchen, I was thrilled to encourage this activity. We bought beets, carrots, potatoes, beef stock (pre-fab at the store - *gasp*), and a few other things.
One of the first steps was shredding the beets, but when Oksana started cutting them open, she found that the insides were striped in layers. "Pink beets!" she shouted! "Fail! I can not make pink borscht!"
Fortunately one of her family was online, and laughing we decided to proceed with the "pink" beets, rather then go to the store for *gasp* canned beets.
I think the volume of tomato sauce exceeded the volume of beets in the soup, and it was delicious and not pink.
